NaNoWriMo is upon us, and already I am behind! I used my morning time yesterday for Other Things, and when I finally got home last night I was too tired for the words-putting-into-sentences-doing. Therefore... I'm cheating. Which is to say, I took a half-hour before work to assess the state of affairs for several WIPs I already have in progress, and took the beginning of something I already wrote and slammed it into a document just to have words on the page. That's a big chunk of the problem, getting started, for me - not having something on the page. One time I wrote an entire novel-length series of erotica (that at some point I should revisit, edit, and publish) where every one began with the same short phrase. It put words on the page and gave me a solid, simple starting point from which so much was able to build.

Ultimately, I want to blow past the 50K wordcount goal by more than the number of words in my starter copypasta, so that it ends up not really being cheating in that way because I will have accomplished 50K <i>new</i> words.

Meanwhile, I'm also poking around looking for nano-centric discord servers, since I'm mostly no longer on the Ploos and need new ways to pull together writing buddies. If any of you would like an invite to MY discord server, so we can check in with and encourage one another, please let me know.

My local region (Canada, Ontario, Toronto) has a discord to which anyone* is welcome whether they live around here or not. You can get to it from the region forum on the NaNo website.

*Provided they follow the rules of course, which are simple and of the 'play nice and keep it PG variety'

My region is far away from your region (United States, Massachusetts) and I don't see any mention of a local discord, so I put an ask in to see if they want one or if they just want physical meetups.

I am told that 50K new words is one of this year's new definitions of Not Cheating. That should help.

And FWIW I myself am cheating mightily. ONE) My novel is a rewrite of a graphic novel script I wrote 25 yrs ago but never drew, so I never have to pause to try to think what happens next. TWO) I have had bad insomnia this month, so I have been spending hours writing when I really wanted to be sleeping instead.

Your nano project sounds interesting - I've heard of books being adapted to GN but not the other way around. Do you think you'll publish? (and can I see?)

Cheating schmeating. Getting words out of your head and into the Void is the point, not crafting a magic opus from start to finish. Although I'm starting to think that the writing part is incidental - the community and friendships that Nano seems to cultivate are becoming way more interesting, especially to a spectator.

I won't rule out attempts at publication cuz why not and people are encouraging me, but I'm not devoted to the idea. And you are welcome to read, even first draft, even incomplete, all dependent on your own interest.
